Whether you’re rushing to the field after work for the local high school’s game, starting the weekend with a Rutgers game on Saturday morning, or waking up with the sun on Sunday to root for the Giants or Jets, one thing is certain during football season: you’re not a true fan if you’re not in the parking lot for the tailgate!
Of course, getting everything ready for game day isn’t always easy when you’re juggling work, school, or other commitments. You’re definitely going to want your burgers to be fresh off the grill, but prepping other food beforehand can make things a lot easier. Here are a few of our favorites!
This one’s got a lot going for it: it’ll keep in the fridge the day before, it won’t get gross during the tailgate, and the flavors go perfectly with a meal fresh off the grill! Use potatoes, parsley, onion, and your other potato salad favorites. Instead of mayonnaise, though, toss them all in a dressing made from ¼ cup olive oil and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. The result is savory, flavorful, and keeps longer than it’s mayo-based cousin. Want an extra bit of freshness? Toss a diced apple into the mix!
You might think of chili as a time consuming, simmering dish, or even an all-day-in-the-slow-cooker dish, but using different ingredients can speed things up. Stick to Great Northern beans and pre-canned green chiles for your base, and toss in a shredded rotisserie chicken from the store, and you’re practically done before you’ve even started. Simmer for a bit the night before, then heat things back up with a pot on the grill for gameday. This one’s perfect for those cold weather games!
Essentially a stuffed mushroom without the mushroom, these savory delights are going to fly once you uncover them. Mix sausage, cooked quinoa, shredded cheese, and a bit of pepper and cornstarch, then shape them the way you would make meatballs. Simply bake them, and you’re good to go! While they still need to be cooked before the game, it’s good to note that you can refrigerate the balls the night before or even freeze them up to a month beforehand. It’s easy to make a double batch, make half for the game, and save half in the freezer for an easy setup next time.
Whatever you decide to snack on, cooking and packing your Subaru beforehand can make for a nice, smooth morning on game day. If you’re looking to rough it, group campsites are available to accommodate everything from single tents up to groups of 25 campers. For those who prefer a little more indoors in their outdoors, the park also has two three-bedroom cabins or a single large group cabin, depending on availability.
With over 20,000 wooded acres in South Jersey, Belleplain has plenty of space for campers to enjoy. Over 150 campsites accommodate tents, trailers, and campers, so you can camp however you like. When you’re spending the day down the shore and see lifeguards and other beach employees cruising along the coast in pickup trucks or UTVs, you might start to wonder whether or not you could do the same thing in your Subaru.
While the team at our New Jersey Subaru dealer is confident that you can drive on sand with the proper preparation–Cars.com has ranked the Subaru Outback among the best vehicles for driving on sand, after all–you should keep in mind that most beach towns forbid driving on the sand during the busy summer season.
Many towns do allow vehicles on the sand from September to March, though; some require a permit, while others don’t. Either way, you should always take proper precautions before driving your vehicle onto the beach.
If you spend much time off-roading around New Jersey, then prepping your Subaru for different terrain or weather is probably a familiar process. With sand, you primary concern is making sure that you don’t sink in. Packed, damp sand is fairly easy to navigate, but loose sand is another story.
To start, deflate your tires to 15 psi or so. This allows your tires to squish out sideways, creating a bigger footprint to distribute your vehicle’s weight so that your wheels don’t just dig ruts into the sand. Of course, you need to re-inflate them before leaving the sand; even a short trip on pavement with such low pressure could destroy your tires or pull them off the rim.
While driving on sand, try to take turns very gradually. Sharp turns will dig you into the sand. Speaking of digging, keep a shovel handy to refill ruts if you need to reverse to attempt a curve more gradually after digging yourself down.
Whatever type of driving you plan to do, safety and planning are always key. To explore some of the most capable vehicles around here at Subaru of Morristown, be sure to contact us by calling (866) 910-3466 today!
