How to Tie Your Christmas Tree to Your Car

christmas tree farm

It’s that special time of year again and you just scored big at the Christmas tree farm, now all that’s left is to get it home in one piece. That can be easier said than done, but with these tips and tricks you can safely tie your Christmas tree to your car without any added stress.

1. Measure: Before purchasing your Christmas tree, measure the height of the room where you plan to display the tree to ensure it will fit. Ideally, your tree should be at least six inches below the ceiling or lower depending on the size of your tree topper.

2. Use the Right Vehicle: It’s best to transport your new fir tree on top of a vehicle equipped with a roof rack, but if need be you can use the bed of a pickup truck, or an SUV, van, or minivan that can fit the tree inside with all the doors closed.

3. Protect Your Car and Tree: Most Christmas tree farms provide netting, but if you happen to go to one that doesn’t, shake the tree before wrapping it in an old blanket or tarp to free any loose needles. It’s also a good idea to lay down another blanket on the roof or bed of your truck to protect your car from scratches, and ensure the tree won’t shed as many needles on the way home.

4. Position the Tree: The tree should be placed so that the trunk is facing toward the front of the car. This helps prevent wind damage to the tree and guarantees your beautiful tree you just picked out won’t lose too many needles.

5. Tying it in Place with Roof Racks: If you have a roof rack, secure the tree to your vehicle by first opening your car doors; if you try to tie the tree down through the windows, you won’t be able to open your car doors. Next, take a piece of rope and knot it to one side of the roof rack. Stretch the rope across the tree, stopping to wrap the line a couple times around the trunk, before tying off the rope to the roof rack on the other side. Wrapping the line around the trunk helps to prevent the tree from sliding under the line and becoming a danger on the road. All that’s left is to repeat this process at the middle and near the tip of the tree to fully secure it to your ride.

6.Tying it in Place Without Roof Racks: If you don’t have a car with a roof rack, you can still get your tree home safely. As with roof racks, remember to tie down the tree with the doors open, rather than going through the windows. Follow the same instructions as above but use a heavier gauge rope so as to not cut into your car door weather stripping and keep your tree in place.

Whether you get your holiday fir from a local lot or a nearby tree farm, these few foolproof tips can help you transport your Christmas tree without risking life, limb, or damage to your vehicle. Taking Care of Your Car in Frigid Weather

The Winter weather of February, March, and even April in the Northeast can be somewhat unpredictable, and so can getting to your destinations if it affects your car. From routine services to genuine Subaru parts, our Morristown dealership has everything you need to maintain your vehicle even in harsh conditions.

Make Sure Your Battery is Charged

With the Winter chill comes the time to check your car battery. In fact, the battery has about half of its cranking power when it’s 0° F compared to when it has full power at 80° F. The battery may only need recharging, but if it’s defective we recommend coming in for a battery replacement. Subaru of Morristown now offers a battery replacement special for Subaru vehicles for $139.95!

Replace Your Windshield Wipers

You may need to replace your windshield wipers if they are leaving behind large streaks. Snow or road salt mixtures accumulate on the glass, so consider coming in to exchange your wipers for winter wiper blades that powerfully clear excess residue. We would also be happy to make sure your windshield wiper fluid is suitable for freezing temperatures!

Clean Your Windows

Before you begin your drive, clear ice from your windows with an ice-scraper rather than your wiper blades. If you park outside before a snow storm, you should also raise your wipers to keep them from freezing to the windshield.

Check Your Tires

We’d be happy to help you check your tire pressure or replace your tires! In the cold, tires tend to lose air pressure, and your safety depends on proper tire function. Also, consider replacing your all-season tires for winter tires because they provide more traction in slippery road conditions.

Change Your Oil

Cold weather takes a toll on your motor oil. This time of year, your oil thickens, making it harder for your engine to turnover. Getting regular oil changes is especially key in the Winter months.

From cold weather to the other extreme, our dealership offers plenty of tips for preparing your vehicle in different climates.

Morristown Subaru dealershipFor starters, Morristown drivers will want to load their Subaru vehicles with the essentials. Warm clothing and blankets are a must, and can even lead to the respite of a cozy napper in the backseat.

It’s also necessary to load up on healthy snacks to avoid stops along the way. Avoiding anything too salty can help delay bathroom breaks on the road. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of anything too messy, for the sake of your own sanity.

Subaru Service Center in NJ Helps Drivers Prepare for Tough Situations

Subaru service NJWhen you plan out your route for a trip, chances are “stuck on the side of the road” isn’t one of your top destinations. After all, you’re accustomed to your Subaru rising to just about any challenge to get you where you need to go.

That stellar performance depends on regular maintenance, though. The simple truth is that well maintained vehicles have a much lower likelihood of breaking down, and a bit of preparation under the hood can go a long way toward keeping your car in top shape.

At our Subaru dealership in NJ, we have the certified technicians and state-of-the-art equipment to make sure that your car is performing its best. Staying on top of regularly scheduled maintenance is crucial, as it drastically reduces your chances of encountering trouble while you’re out on the road.

Subaru of Morristown Offers Advice for Making the Best of a Bad Situation

Even when you take care of your car and stay up to date on maintenance, though, unexpected circumstances can still put you temporarily out of commission. In that eventuality, the best thing you can do is make sure your vehicle has the proper gear for the scenario.

Subaru NJDouble checking your jack, lug wrench, and spare tire can change a flat tire from hours of waiting for a tow to a quick and easy fix. Make sure to check the pressure on your spare regularly, too, as it’s no good to you if it runs flat.
Safety is key if you do have to wait for a tow, though, so be sure to keep the essentials handy. A blanket or warm clothing, a jug of water, and some healthy snacks can all come in handy if you get caught waiting for assistance. Safety flares or a reflective triangle can also help to alert other motorists of your position to avoid an accident.

At the end of the day, the important thing is to prepare for an emergency before it happens; once things go wrong, you’re already stuck. For more tips on how you can prepare for the worst, or to make an appointment for your car’s preventative maintenance, be sure to contact our Subaru service center in NJ online or to call us directly at (866) 868-4009 today!
