Know When It’s Time to Service Your Brakes

Subaru Brake Service

Hearing some funky noises when you stop at a red light? We at Subaru of Morristown in NJ are here to help you figure out what’s going on with your brakes. What exactly the problem is will depend on the specific noise you are hearing.

Squealing vs. Grinding

If your brakes are squealing, you’re likely driving on some worn down brake pads. The brake pad wear indicator rubs against the rotor and causes the squealing sound (sounds like a high-pitched whistle).

If your brakes are grinding, you should check them immediately. This indicates that your brake pads are worn down and you’re damaging your rotors. You don’t want to jeopardize your safety by driving this way for much longer!

If you already know that you’re not the DIY kind of gal or guy when it comes to cars, see why you should service with our NJ Subaru dealership. With professionally trained technicians looking at your car, we’ll determine what’s wrong and have your car ready to go in a jiffy. To the amateur mechanics out there: check out the list below! However, if you don’t know exactly what each step entails, it would be wise to bring your car in for service.

The Repair

  • BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL. This contains essential information and is not a suggestion.
  • Jack up the car and remove the wheel and tire
  • Remove the caliper
  • Check the rotors
  • Check the wheel bearings
  • Replace Wheel Bearings (if necessary)
  • Replace the brake pads
  • Put the assembly back together
  • Bleed the brake fluid
  • Replace the tire and wheel assembly, put the hubcap back on, and you’re all set!

It’s important to note that checking means more than looking. You must check the wheel bearings for pitting and/or scoring and the rotors for a specified minimum thickness measurement (using a micrometer).

The more specifics details involved in each step are essential to your safety. If you don’t know what all of the above steps require, schedule service at Subaru of Morristown or contact our service department at (866) 868-4009. We’ll have you on the road in no-time…your safety and satisfaction guaranteed.
