Sparks Fly When Subaru Fans in Morristown Turn the Engine Over

“Tune up” is one of those phrases that’s become so ingrained in our culture, it’s easy to forget that it actually refers to a specific process when it comes to auto maintenance. Many components of the basic tune up, like setting the engine timing or adjusting ignition points, have become outdated. Swapping out the plugs and wires, though, is still a crucial part of every tune up here at our Morristown Subaru service center.

A tune up is one of the most basic, and also most important, maintenance procedures for your vehicle. You should be on a schedule for your tune ups based on your vehicle and driving habits; our team can help you decide how often this process is necessary. If your vehicle is misfiring or running roughly, though, then you might be past due!

Checking Out Your Plugs and Wires

Under the hood of your Subaru, you’ll find a few car parts that are central to your tune up. These include the distributor cap, spark plug wires, and the spark plugs themselves.

At one end of this set up, you’ll find your distributor cap. From here, you can trace a spark plug wire to each of your spark plugs. It’s a good idea to check each of your wires (be sure to shut your car off before performing any inspections or maintenance). Check your wires for cracks or bare spots in the insulation, as these can lead to a missed or weak spark.

Next, take a look at your spark plugs by pulling the boot of the wire off of each plug and removing them with a spark plug socket. We strongly recommend doing this process one plug at a time, as not to mix up the order of your wires. If your plugs appear white and oily or overly sooty, you’re probably due for a change.

If you’re unsure about the state of your plugs, or if you think there might be a more complicated issue leading to trouble with your plugs or wires, then our experts are here to help! Be sure to contact our Subaru repair shop in Morristown online or to call our team at (866) 910-3466 today.
